AGENCY POLICY ON FLU SEASON
PRECAUTIONS AND ATTENDANCE

Much has been published lately regarding the H1N1 flu virus and the potential impact for outbreaks this flu season. This policy is intended to assure you that MARC is monitoring the situation and that we have made preparations to address issues that may arise. It is important to keep the lines of communication open and focus of the facts.

Some strain of the "Flu" occurs every year. Usually the greatest impact on our community is felt in the fall and winter. Some people are more vulnerable based on health issues, age, and other factors. Those individuals deemed to be "at risk" are typically advised to receive flu vaccine shots as they become available.

One guiding principle agreed upon universally is to keep sick people away from healthy people as the flu is contagious and can spread rapidly. Staying home when sick stops the spread of the flu and other illnesses and helps the sick person to get well. The chart below offers generally accepted guideline to follow when making decisions on whether or not to stay home.

SYMPTOMS
BEST ACTION
Fever (100 degrees+) AND Sore throat or cough
CDC recommends that people with influenza-like illness remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are fever free or signs of a fever without the use of fever reducing medications.
Fever alone, OR Vomiting or Diarrhia, OR Sore throat or cough with NO Fever
Stay at home until symptoms are gone for 24 hours.
So if you are sick, you should stay at home. If a person served is sick, they should stay home. Staff AND all Person's Served showing the above symptoms should NOT come in until the symptoms are gone for at least 24 hours.
